Dakar Traffic

Everybody warned me about Dakar traffic. The city is located on a triangular cape, creating a fairly narrow bottleneck to access the city from its suburbs. However I can honestly say I did not suffer from traffic much. The reason here is the OCI, the Islamic Conference Summit. President Abdoulaye Wade was eager to impress the rich Muslim leaders who flocked to the city, so he built a couple high speed roads, which had been closed for weeks prior to OCI, making traffic worse than ever. Luckily, I arrived the day after the OCI was over… so no traffic.

Traffic however can be somewhat picturesque. Minibuses such as the one seen here are pretty entertaining to watch. And so are the mopeds, horse carriages, occasional goats and pedestrians of all shapes who somehow arrive to their destination.
